Is It Soup Yet? Coming Soon to Your Living Room

To climb a castle wall
And wander ‘round a shopping mall
In someone else’s ugly sneakers

—Graham Kerr

On tour with a troupe of actors
In a truck piled high with mattresses
I knocked on a door in a village
Looking for a place to stay.

Morning Came Without You

I never really wrote about your loss.
Somehow I could never find the words.
I never held you close enough
to understand the way I felt
when you were gone.
I tried to be the brick walls
surrounding the ones who loved you;
encircling them and keeping out chill winds
as they huddled in tears, unable to speak.

Hello You There

Can anyone connect to everyone?
These days Shakespeare and Jesus even
Might commiserate in Starbucks
Boxed out by chicken soup and soda pop
But still get on with it.

My Little Icarus

You belong to the sky

as much as I’m earthbound

and although fate brought us together

that day you lay broken-winged

on the chilly ground

we knew the day would also come

when I’d have to let you go

and you’d follow the sun

So ...

Alitalia, Psychedelia, Uno, Due, Tre

Turn the corner in your checkered nightshirt
And a cop whistles you off the street.
The marathon runners are blasting by
In early morning darkness.
Were you sleepwalking?
A worrisome loss of self-control,
Not to mention unsafe.
Walk along the low bridge
On your way back up the hill.
It’s deserted, yet you hear voices.
You begin to suspect you aren’t awake
Since you haven’t worn that pajama in years.

Loving the Broken Half of Me

I hope you keep in mind
when you're screaming at me
that I am still a broken little girl,
that my inner world has not grown,
has not changed, is still in infinite pain.
I hope you remember this
when we're careening down
those too familiar avenues,
when it all falls apart...

Valentine's Day-Themed Poetry Prompt

Valentine’s Day is coming up — an ideal topic for my very overdue limerick and a haiku (senryu) prompt. I've posted my own limerick and haiku about Valentine's Day and invite my fellow poets to post your own and then add a direct link to your themed poetry, using Mr. Linky. I hope you'll join me in some Valentine's Day verse fun.
